Synopsis:Outsmart Your Enemies. Outrun the Galaxy.

Tina never worries about being ‘ordinary’—she doesn’t have to, since she’s known practically forever that she’s not just Tina Mains, average teenager and beloved daughter. She’s also the keeper of an interplanetary rescue beacon, and one day soon, it’s going to activate, and then her dreams of saving all the worlds and adventuring among the stars will finally be possible. Tina’s legacy, after all, is intergalactic—she is the hidden clone of a famed alien hero, left on Earth disguised as a human to give the universe another chance to defeat a terrible evil.

But when the beacon activates, it turns out that Tina’s destiny isn’t quite what she expected. Things are far more dangerous than she ever assumed. Luckily, Tina is surrounded by a crew she can trust, and her best friend Rachael, and she is still determined to save all the worlds. But first she’ll have to save herself.

Buckle up your seatbelt for this thrilling sci-fi adventure set against an intergalactic war from international bestselling author Charlie Jane Anders.

Review: If you’ve seen the books I’ve read, you’d notice there aren’t many science fictions novels among them. This doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy science fiction, but my standards for a good sci-fi is pretty high. Here’s what I enjoyed and didn’t enjoy from this novel.

Enjoyed: The writing in the story is beautiful and complex, and the same applies to all the outer worlds and their people. As someone who isn’t the biggest fan of sci-fi novels, I often find myself drawn to the characters more than the plot, and the characters in this story don’t disappoint. They are such a diversely talented crew, each with their own backstory that makes them who they are.

Didn’t enjoy: This first point is unfair. I didn’t like the battle scenes, but I almost never do so if you’re someone who enjoys a good battle scene, please disregard my general distaste for battle scenes. I honestly found the plot a little predictable, and I don’t read enough sci-fi to have a huge library of sci-fi plot lines to guess form.

Despite all this, this is just the first book in the series, so I can’t wait to see what develops as the series progresses. I see a lot of potential for crazy adventures, romance, and more.

Synopsis:From New York Times best-selling author Lexi Ryan, Cruel Prince meets A Court of Thorns and Roses in this sexy, action-packed fantasy about a girl who is caught between two treacherous faerie courts and their dangerously seductive princes.

Brie hates the Fae and refuses to have anything to do with them, even if that means starving on the street. But when her sister is sold to the sadistic king of the Unseelie court to pay a debt, she’ll do whatever it takes to get her back—including making a deal with the king himself to steal three magical relics from the Seelie court.

Gaining unfettered access to the Seelie court is easier said than done. Brie’s only choice is to pose as a potential bride for Prince Ronan, and she soon finds herself falling for him. Unwilling to let her heart distract her, she accepts help from a band of Unseelie misfits with their own secret agenda. As Brie spends time with their mysterious leader, Finn, she struggles to resist his seductive charm.

Caught between two dangerous courts, Brie must decide who to trust with her loyalty. And with her heart.”

Review: If you’re into tropes, this is the book for you. Let me put it this way. I finished and enjoyed this book in one day, but I also predicted the main plot only 4% into the book. So as much as it was predictable, I found myself unable to stop reading.

I know that’s not the strongest vote of confidence, but don’t let predicability scare you away! I can honestly say I still really enjoyed this story. I mean, who doesn’t love a fae fantasy with romance and magic. So even though I could see the bigger picture, I still enjoyed getting to see how the plot progressed and to understand the character’s backgrounds.

As the blurb states, if you’re a fan of ACOTAR (and in my opinion a bit of a Cinderella story as well), I do think you’d enjoy this story as well!

Review: A perfect fantasy novel forged with magic, adventure, and romance!

Usually when I finish a book I have a few favorite things, like the plot, characters, or world building, but the balance was so beautiful in this story I honestly can’t choose a favorite. I love the magic in this world and though of course you can find similarities to other magics in other fictional worlds, I always love discovering how magic plays a role in fantasy worlds. However, the characters are almost always the reason I love a story, and these characters are no exception. Last, but not least, the plot was so full of adventure and twists and turns that I loved to see unfold!

While some series start with a relatively introductory first book (which can be nice but not as much of a page-turner), but this felt like the beginning of a story, an adventure, and I cannot wait to read the next book! I mean it! I’m picking up the second book as soon I as finish typing this out. See you after the next one!

Synopsis:In this sequel to The Kinder Poison–which People magazine proclaimed a “delicious high-stakes adventure”–the magical kingdom of Orkena is on the brink of war, and the only person who can save it is Zahru, the girl they once doomed for death.

After surviving the Crossing, Zahru has sworn off adventures. While crown prince Jet navigates the looming threat of war, she’s content to simply figure out what the future holds for them. But they’re dealt a devastating blow when prince Kasta returns with a shocking claim: he’s the true winner of the Crossing and the rightful heir, and he bears the gods’ mark as proof. Even more surprising–he’s not the only one.

Somehow, Zahru possesses the very same mark, giving her equal right to the throne. The last thing she wants is to rule beside her would-be executioner, but she can’t let Orkena fall into his merciless hands. So Zahru, Jet, and their allies must race against the clock to find a way to stop Kasta, because once he’s crowned, there’s no telling what horrors he’ll unleash to win the war.

Zahru will do whatever it takes to keep Kasta from taking the throne…but to stop a villain, is she willing to become one herself?”

Review: If you enjoyed The Kinder Poison get ready for another crazy adventure (less so of a physical adventure this time and more of a mental rollercoaster).

After following the chaos that follows Zahru, Jet, and Kasta, there’s a whole new set of issues in this story! I found the plot of this story super intriguing and I think I may prefer this plot to the first book.

Despite plenty of twists and turns, I found Zahru’s character development in this story incredibly frustrating (though I won’t say more because I don’t what to spoil anything).

As for romance, things get a bit more interesting in this book! I know book three isn’t confirmed, but I would LOVE to see how things progress!

If you enjoyed The Kinder Poison you need to pick this one up! If you haven’t read The Kinder Poison and want to enter a magical fantasy adventure, this is the series for you!

Synopsis:Perfect for fans of Victoria Aveyard and Holly Black, this enthralling fantasy adventure follows a teenage girl chosen to be the human sacrifice in a deadly game between three heirs who will do anything for the crown.

Zahru has long dreamed of leaving the kingdom of Orkena and having the kinds of adventures she’s only ever heard about in stories. But as a lowly Whisperer, her power to commune with animals means that her place is serving in the royal stables until the day her magic runs dry.

All that changes when the ailing ruler invokes the Crossing: a death-defying race across the desert, in which the first of his heirs to finish—and take the life of a human sacrifice at the journey’s end—will ascend to the throne and be granted unparalleled abilities.

With all of the kingdom abuzz, Zahru leaps at the chance to change her fate if just for a night by sneaking into the palace for a taste of the revelry. But the minor indiscretion turns into a deadly mistake when she gets caught up in a feud between the heirs and is forced to become the Crossing’s human sacrifice. Zahru is left with only one hope for survival: somehow figuring out how to overcome the most dangerous people in the world.”

Review: If you’re looking for a fantasy YA novel filled adventure and a dash of romance, this is for you! With plenty of twists and turns, The Kinder Poison was a real page turner.

While most fantasy stories have amazing world-building, I felt like this was not strong point of this novel. However, the adventure, magic, and romance were what really shine. I can’t say too much about the adventure without spoiling the plot, but I can say the magic in this world is incredibly interesting. So even if you miss learning about new magical worlds, you can spend that energy on learning about the different magical abililties.

The romance. I always enjoy a bit of romance, and though I found this story’s romantic plot a bit predictable, I have a feeling the next book in the series will bring something more (perhaps a love triangle, but if so, I’m a little over that trope at the moment so all I can say is I hope the romance is stepped up later on).

While I can’t reveal the adventurous plot, I can say that as the story progressed, the character development was beautiful to watch. I always love when characters are more gray than just black and white, and learning more about their backstory and seeing their actions and reactions is so satisfying.

This story was a great stepping stone for an amazing series, so I can’t wait to start The Cruelest Mercy!

When the Rebel Queen is captured, Kiva is charged with keeping the terminally ill woman alive long enough for her to undergo the Trial by Ordeal: a series of elemental challenges against the torments of air, fire, water, and earth, assigned to only the most dangerous of criminals.

Then a coded message from Kiva’s family arrives, containing a single order: “Don’t let her die. We are coming.” Aware that the Trials will kill the sickly queen, Kiva risks her own life to volunteer in her place. If she succeeds, both she and the queen will be granted their freedom.

But no one has ever survived.

With an incurable plague sweeping Zalindov, a mysterious new inmate fighting for Kiva’s heart, and a prison rebellion brewing, Kiva can’t escape the terrible feeling that her trials have only just begun.

Review: I READ THIS IN ONE DAY, and almost one sitting (I had to go to class or it would have been one sitting). This book is full of amazing characters, romance, magic, and twists and turns! I love a good surprise, and though maybe some of these twists should have been more apparent, I was honestly shocked (even when all the hints were right there?!)

Synopsis: “Annie and Lee were just children when a brutal revolution changed their world, giving everyone–even the lowborn–a chance to test into the governing class of dragonriders.

Now they are both rising stars in the new regime, despite backgrounds that couldn’t be more different. Annie’s lowborn family was executed by dragonfire, while Lee’s aristocratic family was murdered by revolutionaries. Growing up in the same orphanage forged their friendship, and seven years of training have made them rivals for the top position in the dragonriding fleet.

But everything changes when survivors from the old regime surface, bent on reclaiming the city.

With war on the horizon and his relationship with Annie changing fast, Lee must choose to kill the only family he has left or to betray everything he’s come to believe in. And Annie must decide whether to protect the boy she loves . . . or step up to be the champion her city needs.”

Review: Such an interesting fantasy world! I really enjoyed seeing this story being set up and the relationships between the different characters. This book definitely feels like the first book in a series and I really enjoyed seeing how the world was set up.

FLAMEFALL:

Synopsis:Revolutionary flames ignite around Annie, Lee, and a brand new POV character in the second book of the Fireborne trilogy.

After fleeing the revolution and settling into the craggy cliffs of New Pythos, the Dragonlords are eager to punish their usurpers–and reclaim their city. Their first order of business was destroying the Callipolan food supply. Now they’re coming for the Dragonriders.

Annie is Callipolis’s new Firstrider, and while her goal has always been to protect the people, being the government’s enforcer has turned her into public enemy number one.

Lee struggles to find his place after killing kin to prove himself to a leader who betrayed him. He can support Annie and the other Guardians . . . or join the radicals who look to topple the new regime.

Griff, a lowborn dragonrider who serves New Pythos, knows he has no future. And now that Julia, the Firstrider who had protected him, is dead, he is called on to sacrifice everything for the lords that oppress his people–or to forge a new path with the Callipolan Firstrider seeking his help.

With famine tearing Callipolis apart and the Pythians determined to take back what they lost, it will be up to Annie, Lee, and Griff to decide what to fight for–and who to love.”

Review: Did I enjoy this read? Yes. Is this a book I’ll be picking up for years to come? Probably not. Honestly, it’s mostly just bad timing. It’s simply hard to read a book about fantasy revolution in a world that currently is struggling so much and hurting. While this may be the perfect escape of a novel for some people, I tend to find novels filled with battle scenes and political tension harder to get through.

However, I am still curious as to how this series will continue in book three! Despite my lack of love for action, I do find the characters super intriguing and I want to know how it all ends!

If you’re looking for a dragon-filled story, full of action, and political turmoil, look no further (but be sure to check out Fireborne first!)

Series: Rebelwing #2

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Science Fiction

*I received an ARC of Renegade Flight by Andrea Tang through Netgalley, but this in no way affected my honest opinion about the book.*

Synopsis:Aurora Rising meets Top Gun, with the addition of cybernetic dragons, in this is the witty, romantic, and electrifying sci-fi novel by Andrea Tang.

Viola Park’s life is over. She’s gone from planning her future as a pilot-in-training to resigning herself to life on the ground. And it’s all because she made one tiny, not-altogether-legal maneuver on the prestigious GAN Academy’s entrance exam. It’s bad enough that she didn’t get into the Academy, but getting caught cheating? It’s probably the worst thing Vi could imagine.

Still, there are perks that come with Vi’s family legacy at the school, and when Vi learns that recent pilot disappearances have left the Academy desperate for recruits, she does what any good Park would do–uses her connections to wiggle her way back in. But instead of matriculating with the regular class of future Peacekeepers, Vi is forced to enter as a probationary student, which means she’ll have to work twice as hard to prove herself worthy of a place in the cockpit of one of the legendary dragon mechs.

Lucky for Vi, the Academy has set up a combat tournament for all students, and the prize is a guaranteed spot in the Peacekeeper corps. Unlucky for Vi, she’ll have to compete against her probie classmates, including Nicholas Lee, a mysterious boy prone to throwing Vi off her game. And as more Peacekeepers go missing, what starts out as a ploy to save her reputation turns into a fight for the future of Peacekeepers everywhere, and if Vi can’t master her mech combat skills, she might not survive the battle.

Set fifteen years after Prudence Wu took flight in Rebelwing, a new generation of scrappy young pilots challenge corruption, competition, and more dangerous mechs than ever, as they redefine what it means to be a revolutionary. “

Review: I haven’t picked up a sci-fi novel in quite some time, but I have never been so glad that I did! Rebelwing and Renegade Flight is perfect for people who love a blend of fantasy and sci-fi.

I absolutely LOVED Rebelwing, but I don’t usually love it when series picks up later with a different main character. While Renegade Flight follows Vi instead of Pru, after a few pages I was just as immersed and devoted to Vi’s story as I was with Pru’s! The amazing part of a new spin-off is the introduction of more amazing characters!

THIS PLOT. If you’re looking for an action-packed story this is the one! While I was able to predict one pretty large plot twist there were plenty more that caught me off guard. This is a book that once you get into, will be so hard to put down! (AKA I finally had a bit of time to rest after a busy week and I still stayed up to finish the last 40% because I could not wait till the next morning!)

*I received an ARC of A Queen of Gilded Horns by Amanda Joy through Netgalley, but this in no way affected my honest opinion about the book.*

Synopsis:In this sequel to A River of Royal Blood, Eva and Isa must find a way to work together if they want to save their queendom in the thrilling conclusion to this royal fantasy duology.

Now on the run, Eva is desperate for answers about her transformation and her true heritage. Along with Aketo, a small contingent of guards, and the sister she could not kill, Eva flees Ternain in hopes of finding friends and allies to the north–not to mention Baccha–to help her decide what to do next. Princess Isa is a difficult, unremorseful captive, and Eva knows better than to trust her sister, but she wants to. Despite their history, Eva is convinced that to survive the growing unrest in the queendom, she and her sister must make peace. Since the Entwining ceremony, Eva’s and Isa’s lives have been bonded, and each can only die by the other’s hand. This perhaps provides an opening for a truce and a more hopeful future for both the sisters and the queendom, if only Isa would see reason and give up the battle for the throne.

With the two princesses on the run, the Queendom of Myre is on the brink of a revolution. And without Baccha to guide and train her magick, Eva must find a way not only to survive her own metamorphosis, but to unite all the people of Myre, including her sister, by finally taking the Ivory Throne.”

Review: I absolutely LOVE this series. I think there are stories that have some amazing characters or a good plot, but this book has it all! Amanda Joy is an amazingly beautiful writer and has created the most magical world filled with well thought-out characters taking on a twisting plot full of romance and adventure. This may just be one of the best series I have read this year, if not of all.

I love reading Eva’s story and though I totally understand why this is a duology, I can’t help but wish for more! Besides the amazing characters, I just truly love magic in this series and it is so fun to follow the characters as they reveal more and more of the magic and culture in the world they live in.

This series is truly amazing and unforgettable! If you’re looking for an action-packed, magical story with some romance, this is the series for you!
