*I received an ARC of Flirting with Fate by J.C. Cervantes through Netgalley, but this in no way affected my honest opinion about the book.*

Synopsis: “Ava Granados will never forgive herself for being late to her beloved nana’s deathbed. But due to a flash flood that left Ava in a fender bender with a mysterious boy, she missed her grandmother’s mystical blessing–one that has been passed between the women of her family upon death for generations.

Then Nana’s ghost appears with a challenge from beyond the grave. As it turns out, Nana did give Ava a blessing, but it missed its target, landing with the boy from the night of the storm instead. Was it fate? Ava refuses to believe so. With the help of her sisters and Nana’s rather bumbling spiritual guide, she’s determined to reclaim her share of the family magic and set Nana free.

For guarded Ava, befriending some random boy is the last thing she wants to do. She’s gotten along just fine protecting her heart–keeping people at a distance is a great way to ensure no one ever hurts you. But as Ava embarks on her mission to retrieve the lost blessing, she starts to wonder if getting close to thunderstorm boy is worth the risk.

In her YA debut, J.C. Cervantes weaves a tale about family, fate, and finding love where you least expect it.”

Review: I always love a fun romance and Flirting with Fate has such an interesting premise that definitely caught my attention. With a sprinkle of magic, I had a lot of hope for this story.

The premise didn’t disappoint, the magic was interesting and helped push the plot along. I also really enjoyed the character dynamics, especially the relationship between the sisters.

While I still enjoyed this story, I think it’s a story best read in 1 or 2 sittings. I read it in multiple sittings and I honestly found the story a little difficult to follow. So while I leave the story a bit hazy on the details, I still leave it with a general feeling of enjoyment and satisfaction.

Synopsis: “For fans of Caraval and The Night Circus, this decadent and darkly enchanting YA fantasy, set against the backdrop of a Belle Époque-inspired hotel, follows seventeen-year-old Jani as she uncovers the deeply disturbing secrets of the legendary Hotel Magnifique.

All her life, Jani has dreamed of Elsewhere. Just barely scraping by with her job at a tannery, she’s resigned to a dreary life in the port town of Durc, caring for her younger sister Zosa. That is, until the Hotel Magnifique comes to town.

The hotel is legendary not only for its whimsical enchantments, but also for its ability to travel—appearing in a different destination every morning. While Jani and Zosa can’t afford the exorbitant costs of a guest’s stay, they can interview to join the staff, and are soon whisked away on the greatest adventure of their lives. But once inside, Jani quickly discovers their contracts are unbreakable and that beneath the marvelous glamour, the hotel is hiding dangerous secrets.

With the vexingly handsome doorman Bel as her only ally, Jani embarks on a mission to unravel the mystery of the magic at the heart of the hotel and free Zosa—and the other staff—from the cruelty of the ruthless maître d’hôtel. To succeed, she’ll have to risk everything she loves, but failure would mean a fate far worse than never returning home.”

Review: As someone who loved the Caravel series, I think this is definitely a fun read for anyone who loved Caravel. If you haven’t had the chance to read Caravel, I would still recommend this to anyone who is a fan of a slightly mysterious fantasy that is also intertwined with romance.

The Hotel Magnifique itself reminds me of the Hogwarts castle, and is something that makes the story constantly changing and surprising. The magic is this story is unique and playful, yet has a hint of darkness. The characters are also similar in that sense.

Although the romance in this story was somewhat predictable, the other plot lines helped provide movement and suspense. Meanwhile, the glamour of the imagery and the beauty of the magic helped provide the imagination with lots of colorful information.

Although I usually prefer when a fantasy is in a series to help better picture the magical world, this standalone tied up all the loose ends all while providing a detailed snapshot of this magical microcosm.

Edgewood

Pages: 400

Rating: ★★★★★ (4.5/5)

*I received an ARC of Edgewood by Kristin Ciccarelli through Netgalley, but this in no way affected my honest opinion about the book.*

Synopsis: “No matter how far she runs, the forest of Edgewood always comes for Emeline Lark. The scent of damp earth curls into her nose when she sings and moss creeps across the stage. It’s as if the woods of her childhood, shrouded in folklore and tall tales, are trying to reclaim her. But Emeline has no patience for silly superstitions.

When her grandfather disappears, leaving only a mysterious orb in his wake, the stories Emeline has always scoffed at suddenly seem less foolish. She enters the forest she has spent years trying to escape, only to have Hawthorne Fell, a handsome and brooding tithe collector, try to dissuade her from searching.

Refusing to be deterred, Emeline finds herself drawn to the court of the fabled Wood King himself. She makes a deal—her voice for her grandfather’s freedom. Little does she know, she’s stumbled into the middle of a curse much bigger than herself, one that threatens the existence of this eerie world she’s trapped in, along with the devastating boy who feels so familiar.

With the help of Hawthorne—an enemy turned reluctant ally who she grows closer to each day—Emeline sets out to not only save her grandfather’s life, but to right past wrongs, and in the process, discover her true voice.

Haunting and romantic, Kristen Ciccarelli’s Edgewood is an exciting novel from a bold, unforgettable voice in fantasy.”

Review: In terms of genre, a romance filled fantasy novel is pretty much at the top of my list. So while Edgewood already meets that criteria, let me go into more detail and explain how it compares the many other fantasy romances that exist.

The premise of Edgewood was pretty interesting too me, a girl who is drawn to a fantasy realm. Although it’s familiar, it’s not so familiar to me that it feels like a trope. Compared to other fantasy novels, it’s more romance heavy and though the magic of this world is still really interesting and plays a big part in the story, it’s not as fantasy heavy as the “real world” still exists in this story.

What I am about to say next may sound negative, but I mean it in the best of ways. This books reads like a wattpad story. I don’t mean to say that this sounds unprofessional, but rather it’s one of those easily digestible romances that is also such a page turner. It’s almost addicting and makes you want more. However, if you’re looking for a book that makes you question life or has you analyzing every other sentence, this probably isn’t the story for you. On the other hand, if you’re looking for an adventurous, fast-paced, romance, you should definitely pick this one up!

Review: I love that so many fantasy novels come in series because you can really become immersed in another world. Although I think the premise of this story is pretty interesting, I didn’t get completely hooked into this story, so I’m definitely hoping that the books following this one in the series will bring more to the table.

Reading this story made it very clear that this was the first in a series. Although that’s not exactly a bad thing, it does make me wish I knew more about the main character as well as want to see how the plot progresses. Essentially I had a slight cloud of confusion while reading this story that I hope the future books will help clear up.

Synopsis: “A snarky seventeen-year-old must team up with an enigmatic criminal to cure herself of dangerous forbidden magic in the first book of a new fantasy duology from Morgan Rhodes, the New York Times bestselling author of the Falling Kingdoms series.

Josslyn Drake knows only three things about magic: it’s rare, illegal, and always deadly. So when she’s caught up in a robbery gone wrong at the Queen’s Gala and infected by a dangerous piece of magic—one that allows her to step into the memories of an infamously evil warlock—she finds herself living her worst nightmare. Joss needs the magic removed before it corrupts her soul and kills her. But in Ironport, the cost of doing magic is death, and seeking help might mean scheduling her own execution. There’s nobody she can trust.

Nobody, that is, except wanted criminal Jericho Nox, who offers her a deal: his help extracting the magic in exchange for the magic itself. And though she’s not thrilled to be working with a thief, especially one as infuriating (and infuriatingly handsome) as Jericho, Joss is desperate enough to accept.

But Jericho is nothing like Joss expects. The closer she grows with Jericho and the more she sees of the world outside her pampered life in the city, the more Joss begins to question the beliefs she’s always taken for granted—beliefs about right and wrong, about power and magic, and even about herself.

In an empire built on lies, the truth may be her greatest weapon.”

Review: What a great start to a series! If you’re looking for a fun fantasy that has some romance, drama, adventure, and some crazy plot twists, this is for you!

I love when stories catch me off guard and this one definitely pulled quite a few twists! I started the first few chapters thinking this might turn out to be too predictable, but by the end I had easily missed quite a few large plot twist which made this a much more exciting read!

The magic of this world is unique but seems to follow a familiar guideline. However, this magical world is definitely interesting and I can’t wait to see more details in following books! The same applies to the characters! They all present quite interesting personalities, but I can’t wait to see their growth and more of their complexities as the plot progresses.

The only reason this didn’t reach a full 5 stars was because it felt geared for slightly younger readers (as it should be with a 17 year old protagonist!) However if you’re a life longer reader of YA, like me, it can feel a little youthful (which is to no fault of its own!)

*I received an ARC of The Excalibur Curse by Kiersten White through Netgalley, but this in no way affected my honest opinion about the book.*

Synopsis: “The gripping conclusion to the acclaimed Arthurian fantasy trilogy from New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White finds Guinevere questioning everything—friends and enemies, good and evil, and, most of all, herself.

While journeying north toward the Dark Queen, Guinevere falls into the hands of her enemies. Behind her are Lancelot, trapped on the other side of the magical barrier they created to protect Camelot, and Arthur, who has been led away from his kingdom, chasing after false promises. But the greatest danger isn’t what lies ahead of Guinevere—it’s what’s been buried inside her.

Vowing to unravel the truth of her past with or without Merlin’s help, Guinevere joins forces with the sorceress Morgana and her son, Mordred—and faces the confusing, forbidden feelings she still harbors for him. When Guinevere makes an agonizing discovery about who she is and how she came to be, she finds herself with an impossible choice: fix a terrible crime, or help prevent war.

Guinevere is determined to set things right, whatever the cost. To defeat a rising evil. To remake a kingdom. To undo the mistakes of the past…even if it means destroying herself.

Guinevere has been a changeling, a witch, a queen—but what does it mean to be just a girl?”

Review: The FINALE. After the ending of The Camelot Betrayal, The Excalibur Curse picks up where they left off and brings you right back into the chaos and drama of this Arthurian universe.

Honestly, I forgot a bit of the context of the previous stories, but it was easy to get back into the world as each line brought back memories and landscapes, etc. Like the previous, the plot is full of magic, adventure, and growth.

This is such a beautiful story of growth and Guinevere’s exploration of herself and her relationships. While it’s fun to get swept up with the adventure and magic of it all, I found this story so beautiful because of finally seeing the deeper thoughts and feelings of Guinevere.

Synopsis: “Kiva trades one cage for another when she leaves behind a deadly prison for a deceptive palace in this dark and dangerous sequel to The Prison Healer, which Sarah J. Maas called “a must-read.”

Kiva Meridan is a survivor.

She survived not only Zalindov prison, but also the deadly Trial by Ordeal. Now Kiva’s purpose goes beyond survival to vengeance. For the past ten years, her only goal was to reunite with her family and destroy the people responsible for ruining their lives. But now that she has escaped Zalindov, her mission has become more complicated than ever.

As Kiva settles into her new life in the capital, she discovers she wasn’t the only one who suffered while she was in Zalindov—her siblings and their beliefs have changed too. Soon it’s not just her enemies she’s keeping secrets from, but her own family as well.

Outside the city walls, tensions are brewing from the rebels, along with whispers of a growing threat from the northern kingdoms. Kiva’s allegiances are more important than ever, but she’s beginning to question where they truly lie. To survive this time, she’ll have to navigate a complicated web of lies before both sides of the battle turn against her and she loses everything.”

Review: I absolutely loved The Prison Healer so there was a lot of high hopes and anticipation for The Gilded Cage. Let’s just say, it didn’t disappoint!

Something I love about fantasy novels is the fact that they act as a safe space that allows for the fun of magic and romance, all while touching on heavier issues surrounding politics, ethics, death, and more. This book isn’t a heavy one, in the sense that it’s quite easy to escape into. However, there are still lessons to be learned.

If you’re back from The Prison Healer for more romance I would say there’s just enough in this one! Although I wouldn’t say romance is the main focus of this story, there’s is a perfect sprinkle that will have you waiting for the next book!

So, what is this one about if it’s not about romance? MAGIC, TENSION, SECRETS, and MORE. This plot is action-packed!! I don’t know want to give more away, but a LOT goes on so get ready for the ride!

My last thought of reading this book is much like for the first book of the series: I WANT MORE PLEASE!!

Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, a nun who cleanses the bodies of the deceased so that their souls can pass on; otherwise, they will rise as spirits with a ravenous hunger for the living. She would rather deal with the dead than the living, who trade whispers about her scarred hands and troubled past.

When her convent is attacked by possessed soldiers, Artemisia defends it by awakening an ancient spirit bound to a saint’s relic. It is a revenant, a malevolent being that threatens to possess her the moment she drops her guard. Wielding its extraordinary power almost consumes her—but death has come to Loraille, and only a vespertine, a priestess trained to wield a high relic, has any chance of stopping it. With all knowledge of vespertines lost to time, Artemisia turns to the last remaining expert for help: the revenant itself.

As she unravels a sinister mystery of saints, secrets, and dark magic, her bond with the revenant grows. And when a hidden evil begins to surface it, she discovers that facing this enemy might require her to betray everything she has been taught to believe—if the revenant doesn’t betray her first.

Review: This story is filled with adventure, action, and a creepy/mystical experience. I didn’t enjoy this book, but not because the story itself was bad, but the combination of the plot, setting, and characters were not to my taste.

Before I explain how my taste didn’t align, let me point out why it would be worth it to pick up this book. First of all, it’s a world that uses spiritual aspects that results in a variety of tenses scenes and magical rituals. If that’s world you’re ready to immerse yourself into, than be excited for the detailed scenes that help you delve into the Vespertine world.

Now, the main issue of this story for me was the plot. I know that sounds bad, but it’s more an issue with taste. The spiritual magic of this world was interesting but not quite captivating and this led me to never really connect with the main character, Artemisia. The first word that comes to mind when reading this book is Halloween, and I have never been the biggest fan of Halloween, but for fans of fiction, a touch of fantasy, and Halloween I think this would be a fun journey to read about!

I honestly love Rogerson’s writing, so although this may not have been the book for me, I can’t wait to see what other stories Rogerson will create.

*I received an ARC of Teen Titans: Beast Boy loves Raven through Netgalley, but this in no way affected my honest opinion about the book.*

Synopsis:From #1 New York Times bestselling author KAMI GARCIA (Beautiful Creatures) and artist GABRIEL PICOLO, the creative duo behind the New York Times bestselling graphic novel Teen Titans: Raven, comes the romantic meet-up we have all been waiting for!

It seems like years, but it’s only been a few days since Raven Roth recovered her memories, trapped her demon father, Trigon, into her amulet, and had her heart broken for the first time. But she doesn’t have time to think about the past…she has to focus on finding a way to get rid of Trigon for good.

Garfield Logan still can’t believe he has powers that allow him to change into different animals, but the price of knowing that his parents kept this secret hidden from him just feels too high. And what’s more, his difficulty controlling these abilities could have unexpected consequences.

Both are seeking answers from the one person who seems to have them all figured out: Slade Wilson.

When their paths converge in Nashville, Raven and Gar can’t help but feel a connection, despite the secrets they both try to hide. It will take a great amount of trust and courage to overcome the wounds of their pasts. But can they find acceptance for the darkest part of themselves? Or maybe even love?”

Review: I have been waiting for this book in the series!! I am so, so excited to see Beast Boy and Raven interact. As a 21-year-old reading a book meant for 13-17-year-olds, I do have to warn my fellow older readers to recognize that the plot is not as nuanced as some other novels, but that this is a perfect story for younger readers.

THE ART. Every Teen Titans graphic novel so far has been stunning and this one is no exception. From the colors to the details, I adore everything about it. This was a quick read for me, but I read it over because the art is just so stunning it would be a waste not to take it all in!

THE PLOT. With the last two more focused on the individual backgrounds of Beast Boy and Raven, I felt like the plot really speeds up in this one. Not only do we get to see how Beast Boy and Raven interact and grow, but we also see them against the world. There are also some new fun characters introduced and with so much going on I can’t wait to see what’s in store in future stories!

Synopsis: “Magic doesn’t exist in the broken city of Lkossa anymore, especially for girls like sixteen-year-old Koffi. Indentured to the notorious Night Zoo, she cares for its fearsome and magical creatures to pay off her family’s debts and secure their eventual freedom. But the night her loved ones’ own safety is threatened by the Zoo’s cruel master, Koffi unleashes a power she doesn’t fully understand–and the consequences are dire.

As the second son of a decorated hero, Ekon is all but destined to become a Son of the Six–an elite warrior–and uphold a family legacy. But on the night of his final rite of passage, a fire upends his plans. In its midst, Ekon not only encounters the Shetani–a vicious monster that has plagued the city and his nightmares for nearly a century–but a curious girl who seems to have the power to ward off the beast. Koffi’s power ultimately saves Ekon’s life, but his choice to let her flee dooms his hopes of becoming a warrior.

Desperate to redeem himself, Ekon vows to hunt the Shetani down and end its reign of terror, but he can’t do it alone. Meanwhile, Koffi believes finding the Shetani and selling it for a profit could be the key to solving her own problems. Koffi and Ekon–each keeping their true motives secret from the other–form a tentative alliance and enter into the unknowns of the Greater Jungle, a world steeped in wild magic and untold dangers. The hunt begins. But it quickly becomes unclear whether they are the hunters or the hunted.

In this much-anticipated series opener, fate binds two Black teenagers together as they strike a dangerous alliance to hunt down the ancient creature menacing their home–and discover much more than they bargained for.

Review: This story was truly filled with magic and is a start to what I imagine is going to be a fast-paced adventure series.

There are so many different aspects I loved about this novel, where do I start? Well, first of all, I love the writing style. Not every novel is written so beautifully and I really enjoyed this author’s writing style. In addition to beautiful prose, you will easily get your fill of magic, adventure, and a splash of romance (which I can’t wait to see develop in later books in the series!).

This story is written in alternating perspective style, which almost always confuses me in the beginning, but once I got the hang of each perspective, I love to see what’s going on from all angles. This is just a warning for anyone else who also gets confused easily by different narrators, but just hang in there, this story is worth the patience!

What makes this fantasy so unique? The world-building and magic. While I’m sure the characters will become more layered as the series progress, the world-building and magic are really what catch my eye in this first novel. It’s wild and animalistic magic, but it already reveals a hidden depth that I can’t wait to read in the next book!
